Children Who Do Not Look You in the Eye:
The Secrets of Autistic Behavior

Antonio Parisi, MD and Anna Lisa Buonomo
Foreword by
David F. Delacato, MEd

Dr. Parisi explains why autism is a neurological condition caused by brain injury, thus challenging the deep-rooted belief that autism is a psychological illness. Anna Lisa Buonomo examines the behaviors of an autistic boy using neurological principles as the basis for diagnosis, and shows how the correct neurological diagnosis leads to more effective treatment.   Italian edition: 1999

The Ultimate Stranger: The Autistic Child
Carl H. Delacato, EdD
Foreword by
David F. Delacato, MEd

Dr. Delacato tells of his research in the field of autism. His sensory approach presents exciting breakthroughs based on physiological and neurological principles rather than psychological theories. In this book Dr. Delacato emphasizes the importance of re-imprinting early stages of brain dominance for autistic children, and presents practical suggestions for evaluating and treating the problem of autism at home.   English edition: 199X

A New Start for the Child With Reading Problems
Carl H. Delacato, EdD
Foreword by
David F. Delacato, MEd

Dr. Delacato suggests that reading problems are the result of inadequate development of the human nervous system, which leads to poorly established dominance and thus, poor reading. In this book he includes ways to evaluate a child's development neurologically and presents a program to improve a child's development and reading.

ABSTRACT We report three children with autistic spectrum disorders who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and intravenous administration of secretin to stimulate pancreaticobiliary secretion. All three had an increased pancreaticobiliary secretory response when compared with nonautistic patients (7.5 to 10 mL/min versus 1 to 2 mL/min). Within 5 weeks of the secretin infusion, a significant amelioration of the children's gastrointestinal symptoms was observed, as was a dramatic improvement in their behavior, manifested by improved eye contact, alertness, and expansion of expressive language. These clinical observations suggest an association between gastrointestinal and brain function in patients with autistic behavior.

This study examined individuals who were labeled autistic at approximately 4-5 years of age. The authors obtained home movies from first birthday parties and had people trained in neurological observation evaluate the videos. In virtually 100% of the cases neurological "soft signs" were observable in each child. This takes the time issue out of the equation.

Anatomical Abnormalities in the Brains of Monozygomatic Twins Discordant for Schizophrenia

New England Journal of Medicine.
vol 32: pp 789-794, 1990

This study examined NMRI scans of identical twins discordant for schizophrenia. In 12 out of 15 sets of twins radiologists were able to identify the schizophrenic individual based solely on evaluation of the scans. The team further showed that in 14 out of the 15 sets of twins, the schizophrenic individual had reduced brain volume (increased ventricular size) when compared directly to the normal twin. By extrapolation we can draw the same conclusions for autistic individuals.

The Etiology of Autism in a Group of Mentally Retarded Subjects
Elia M, Bergonzi P, Feri R, Musumeci SA, Paladino A, Panerai S, Ragusa RM. (Developmental) Brain Dysfunction. 3: pp 228-240, 1990

In depth clinical evaluation of 33 autistic individuals. The results of this extensive examination showed that in 91% of the cases reported there was observable organic brain dysfunction. The team of doctors and scientists, led by Maurizio Elia and Raffaele Ferri, performed extensive histories and physical and clinical examinations on the 33 autistic individuals. The study used neuroimaging, neurochemistry, and neurophysiology to aid in the diagnosis (this multi-modal approach is why the authors believe they obtained such a high percentage of observable organic disease). The team reported a high correlation between autism and seizure activity (42%), as well as a high number of abnormal EEG traces (52%) in autistic individuals.

The results of this study suggest that individuals suspected of having autism should undergo vigorous clinical examinations in order to uncover the underlying organic brain dysfunction.
